Gower, Bernard
Born 21st February 1895 Port Frederick Tasmania the son of Charles James and Bridget Louisa Gower (nee Kennedy) he embarked Melbourne 6th December 1916 on board “HMAT Orsova” with the 40th Infantry Battalion.
He died 28th March 1917 at the Fovant Military Hospital England from broncho pneumonia and was buried in the Fovant (St George) Churchyard, United Kingdom
Mr C. Gower of the Railway Department, Strahan, and formerly of Zeehan, was on his holidays when word came of the death of his son, Bernard in the trenches in France, to which reference was made in our issue of yesterday. Mr Gower was in Devonport (where he was stationed for some years) on Saturday, and was the recipient of many expressions of sympathy on his behalf and to the bereaved mother. Private Gower only left Launceston on December 4 and Melbourne on December 6 arriving in England in January. He must have been in the trenches only for a brief span when the fatal summons came. As stated, he was a native of Devonport, and was employed at the Boulder mine, Renison Bell, when be obeyed the call from the front. Zeehand and Dundas Herald 10th April 1917
