GRAY, CHARLES WILLIAM THOMAS
Studio portrait of 6741 Private (Pte) Charles William Thomas Gray of Fern Tree, Tas. A bushman before enlisting in July 1916, Pte Gray formed part of the 22nd Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion along with his older brother 6737 Pte Victor Gray. Charles Gray was killed during the German attack at Lagnicourt on 15 April 1917. Victor Gray died five days before at Bullecourt. The death has been announced by the military authorities of Victor and Charlie Gray, of the Fern Tree. Both these young men, who were sons of Mr. J. Gray, of Fern Tree, left Claremont' Camp in the 22nd Reinforcements for the 12th Battalion about seven months ago. Victor, the eldest son, enlisted in Now Zealand, but subsequently got transferred to the A.I.F., and immediately entered Claremont. His younger brother joined him there and they kept together as far as possible, right through their training career, and were evidently together in the recent advance. Victor was killed in action, while Charlie died of wounds five days later.
