Gridley Alfred Charles
Born 11th May 1889 Launceston Tasmania to Alfred and Eliza Gridley (nee Hampton) a miller who departed Melbourne 5th January 1916 on board “HMAT Afric” with the 26th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 5th August 1916 at Pozieres and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. On Friday afternoon the Reverend Martin of St Mary’s conveyed the sad news to Mr A C Gridley of Deloraine that his son A.C (Charlie) Gridley who was previously reported missing on August 4, 1916 was now officially reported killed in action on that date. Private Gridley saw service in Egypt and France and took part in some heavy fighting on the Somme. Deceased was well known in junior football circles and was vice captain of United St Aiden’s. Private Gridley was quite a young man being 27 years to age and a flour miller by trade The Weekly Courier 9th August 1917
