GURR, GILBERT REES
Studio portrait of 837 Private (Pte) Gilbert Rees Gurr, 40th Battalion. A shop assistant from Launceston, Tas prior to enlistment, Pte Gurr embarked with D Company from Hobart on HMAT Berrima on 1 July 1916. Whilst serving in France, he was killed in action on 15 April 1917, aged 23, and was buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France. Private Gilbert Rees Gurr made the supreme sacrifice for King and Country on April 15th in France. The deceased soldier left Tasmania about 10 months ago with the 40th Battalion and had been in the trenches about three months. Prior to enlistment with the A.I.F. he was employed in the business of W. Gurr and Sons, Lower Charles Street and his kind disposition and good nature made him highly respected by all with whom he came into contact. Private G R Gurr was also an active member of the Tamar Rowing Club and was a very promising young oarsman. He was 23 years of age. His parents, Mr and Mrs Ben J Gurr reside at “Penquite” The Weekly Courier 10th May 1917
