Gurr, John Alexander
Studio portrait of 3562 Pte John Alexander Gurr, 11th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion, of Western Cree, Chudleigh, Tas, aged 35 years. Pte Gurr enlisted on 7 August 1915 and embarked Melbourne aboard HMAT Ascanius on 10 November 1915. He died of pneumonia on 24 November 1915 and was buried at Alexandria, Egypt. LATE PRIVATE GURR The Tasmanian contingent that left for the front in November arrived in Egypt in due course. After the vessel had been 14 days at sea one of the soldiers Mr John Gurr son of Mr and Mrs G Gurr Waverley Woollen Mills, Launceston died of pneumonia leaving a wife and three little children behind. The body was buried at sea with military honours. Mr Gurr has heard no tidings of his wounded and missing son Alfred so he has given two sons to the Empire. The Weekly Courier 23rd December 1914
