Haley, Ambrose Augustine

 

Born 7th December 1892 Portland Tasmania the son of Thomas Augustine and Mary Anne Haley (nee Fox) an accountant he embarked Melbourne 11th May 1917 on board “HMAT Ascanius” with the Field Artillery Brigade. 

He enlisted 7 Nov 1916 as a Gunner and saw service in France. Although wounded (gunshot to left leg) he recovered and returned to the front. He complained of deafness in 1918 and was sent back to England. 

According to his father he was a musician of exceptional ability and during his convalescent period was leading flautist with several bands. 

He died Christmas day 1918 of carcinoma of the pancreas and lungs and was buried in the presence of his brother and other relatives in Our Lady of Rosary Cemetery, Midleton, County Cork, Ireland. 

His brother Warrant Officer Urban Aloysius Haley served as a Military Staff Clerk with the 1st Division in France and Belgium and was awarded the Meritorius Service medal.
