Harris, Herbert James
Born 30th December 1894 George Town Tasmania to Kingsland and Julia Amelia Harris (nee Cragg) a labourer who departed Sydney 9th August 1915 on board “HMAT Runic” with the 1st. Infantry Battalion He was killed in action 7th June 1917 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium The sad news was conveyed to Mr and Mrs H. K Harris of George Town on Friday evening that their eldest son Private Herbert James Harris had made the supreme sacrifice fighting for his King and Country on June 7th. Pte Harris who was just under 22 years of age left Tasmania with reinforcements just under 10 months ago and prior to the Western front had been undergoing training and carrying on military duties in England. The deceased was a native of George Town and his manly quiet and unassuming manner endeared him to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. This is the third young man from George Town all in the prime of manhood that has been killed in action in a very short time. Weekly Courier 5th July 1917
