If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of hosting this website to keep it alive would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

Hastie, Albert

A blacksmith from Abbotsham Tasmania he listed his sister Mrs Helen Marquis as his next of kin he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion.

Sgt Hastie was killed in action 13th October 1917 in Belgium (previously reported missing) and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.

Military Medal

At Zonnebeke on the 4th to the 5th October 1917 this NCO performed most gallant and valuable services.  He directed the work of the four company lewis guns with great ability and courage and under heavy fire and so secured the defence of the consolidated position.  His coolness was a great encouragement to the lewis gunners to hang on to the more difficult positions.  He was subsequently killed in action during operations at Passchendaele on the 12/13th October 1917.  I certify that had this NCO lived his name would have been submitted for distinction.

Date of recommendation 1st January 1919
