If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of hosting this website to keep it alive would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

Hayes, Elvin Hansell Raymond

A labourer from Sheffield Tasmania who listed his next of kin as his uncle Albert Denham of West Devonport he embarked Hobart 8th August 1916 on board “HMAT Ballarat” with the 40th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 12th February 1917 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

Rev. G. A. Rowe had the sorrowful task of informing Mr. Albert Denham of Devonport that his nephew Private Elvin Hansel R. Hayes of the 40th Battallion, had been killed in action on February 12 in France, also conveying to the bereaved family the sympathy of the King and Queen and the State Commandant in their great loss. It is only 10 days ago since Mr. Denham was advised by the Base Records Office that Pte Hayes had been wounded but remained on duty. Now has come the sad intelligence that three days later the gallant soldier received his death wound.
