HAYWARD, CHARLES HENRY

H11861

Outdoor portrait of 3292 Private (Pte) Charles Henry Hayward, 12th Battalion, of Deloraine, Tas, who enlisted on 29 July 1915 and embarked from Hobart aboard HMAT Ajana on 13 December 1915. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France, on 23 July 1916 aged 19 years. He is commemorated at Villers Bretonneux, France.

Mrs. W. Ward, of Deloraine, has received the sad news that her adopted son and nephew, Charles H. Hayward ("Chum'") was killed in action between July 23 and 25, 1916. He was previously reported missing. He left Claremont on October 19, 1915 with reinforcements, and left Melbourne on December 13 of that year for Egypt. While there he was transferred to the first famous Tasmanian regiment with his uncle, Claude Clarke, one of the Anzacs and left for France on March 6. 1916. There he met his death. He was a messenger between the lines and headquarters. Fearless and brave, the young soldier was one of Tasmania's best shots.

Examiner Launceston 17th July 1917.
