Higgins, Leslie James

Born 18th September 1885 Campbell Town Tasmania to William and Esther Hannah Higgins (nee Kent) he was a wool classer who embarked Brisbane 29th June 1915 on HMAT Aeneas with the 26th Infantry Battalion.

He served in Gallipoli and on the 28th August 1915 he was promoted to sergeant.  On the 26th August 1916 he was

“Mentioned for good and gallant conduct in connection with the recent hard fighting around Pozieres 26th August 1916”

He was killed in action 14th November 1916 at Fleurs France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France

Mr and Mrs William Higgins of Ross have received news that their eldest son Sergeant Leslie J. Higgins has been killed in action in France. Sergeant Higgins was a fine type of our Australian soldier being of splendid build and a very manlv character. Much sympathy is felt throughout the district for his parents and their family.  Prior to enlisting in the A.I.F. Sergeant Higgins had been a member of the citizen forces. Mr and Mrs Higgins have another son at the front who has seen much active service, including the landing at Gallipoli.
