Hills, Joseph Norman
Born 20th April 1890 Hamilton Tasmania the son of Eden Thomas and Sarah Hills (nee Booth) a labourer and married to Ruby Clarice Hutt (dec’d) he embarked Melbourne 19th February 1915 on board “HMAT Runic” with the 15th Infantry Battalion.
He served Gallipoli where he received a gunshot wound to the thigh and sent to hospital in England. He rejoined his battalion in France where he was appointed Lance Corporal on the 19th August 1916. In December 1916 he was again wounded in action and on the 16th December 1916 was appointed Corporal. On 21st April 1917 he was appointed sergeant and on the 10th November 1917 to Company Sergeant Major.
On the 3rd April 1918 he was wounded for the 3rd time but remained on duty and two days later was killed.
He was killed in action 5th April 1918 in France and as his grave could not be located is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France
