Hingston, Eric Stanley
Born 27th October 1895 Deloraine Tasmania the eldest son of Councillor Edmund Tasman and Fanny Matilda Hingston (nee Stratton) he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 14th May 1917 at Messines whilst in charge of a bombing post in a front line trench on the Western front and is commemorated in the Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium. On Monday evening last the sad news was conveyed to Mr. E T. Hingston of Moltema that his son Private Eric Stanley Hingston had been killed in action on May 14. Private Hingston who went away with a Tasmanian Battalion had been in the fighting in France since November last. Notwithstanding the trying time in the trenches during the past winter owing to the extreme cold, he had made up to 13 stone in weight, although only 21 years of age. The Examiner 4th June 1917
