Holden, Wilfred James

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Born 11th June 1893 Longford Tasmania the son of Henry and Ada Susan Holden (nee Hodges) a farm labourer he embarked Melbourne 27th September 1915 on board “HMAT Hororata” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. 

He was killed in action 10th June 1918 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France. 

He was mentioned in a newspaper article (The Advocate 19 April 1919 p6) as being commemorated on an honour board at the Northdown State School (Bandy Coote Hill) Bakers Lane (Mapping our Anzacs). 

Private Wilfred J Holden of Northdown 52nd Battalion 9th Reinforcements (late 12th) paid the supreme sacrifice on June 10th somewhere in France.  He enlisted the second time in July 1915 and arrived in Egypt in October.  He went to France with the 1st Contingent was wounded twice and gassed twice and had just returned to the firing line after being gassed in March.  He was the sole support of his mother, three brothers and a sister.
