HOLMES, LESLIE LEONARD
Studio portrait of three soldiers. One is known to be 2034 Private (Pte) Leslie Leonard Holmes, 3rd Reinforcements, 26th Battalion, of Nile, Tas, aged 19. Pte Holmes enlisted on 25 June 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Makarini on 10 September 1915. He was wounded at Pozieres, France, and died of wounds on 30 July 1916 whilst a prisoner of war.
Word has been received at the Nile through the Defence Department that Private Leslie Holmes 'previously reported missing and wounded in France’ died of wounds a prisoner in Germany on July 30, 1916. The sad news was conveyed to his father by the Rev. C. H. Snedden. Private Holmes was the fourth son of Mr W. Holmes of the Nile, and left Tasmania with the Third Reinforcements, 26th Battalion, on July 27, 1915. The sympathy of the district goes out to Mr Holmes and family in their sad bereavement.
