Holtum, Henry Edward
Born 1894 Zeehan Tasmania the son of
Richard and Elizabeth Holtum (nee Duffy) a grocer’s
assistant he embarked Hobart 20th October
1914 on board “HMAT Geelong with the 12th
Infantry Battalion.
He was wounded around the 25th
April 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and evacuated to
Malta. He returned to duty and was awarded the Military
Medal 14th December 1917 whilst serving in
France.
'In the
attack on POLYGON WOOD, east of HOOGE on 20/21st
September, 1917, Sgt. HOLTUM commanded the Headquarters
Signal Section, the Signalling Officer having been
killed. He displayed great initiative and conspicuous
bravery under fire, continually moving about the line
arranging for the establishment of communications, which
were most satisfactory during the whole engagement. Sgt. HOLTUM has been in almost every engagement in which the
Battalion has taken part and has commanded his section
in 3 of the last’
Sgt Holtum became ill while on leave and
died 22nd September 1918 in England from
tubercular meningitis and was buried in the
Norwich Cemetery, Norfolk, United Kingdom.
Two brothers were also lost, Cyril Robert
Holtum (No 2029) died 11th August 1918 in
France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux
Memorial and Hubert Darcy (No 506) died 9th
June 1915 from wounds received at Gallipoli and was
buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery
