Horton, Frederick Norton
Born Circular Head an 18 year labourer who listed as his next of kin his sister Mrs Edgar Smedley, Forest, Tasmania he embarked with the 15th Battalion later transferring to the 28th Battalion. He was killed in action 29th July 1918 and is commemorated in the Longeau British Cemetery. Forest Hero’s Exploit. We have received from Mr. M.Tierney the army form giving particulars as to how the Military Medal was won by the late Pte. Frederick Norwood Horton (son of the late James Horton, of Forest). This brave soldier was killed three weeks after gaming his distinction.The official document was received from the Defence Department by the sister of deceased (Mrs. Edgar Smedley), and reads as follows : — “On night 10/11th June,1918, during the attack south of Morlancourt, near Albert, these men showed great courage and resourcefulness. Before the final objective was reached, a German machine gun was holding up part of our line. Corporal H. L. Seymour and Private Horton, entirely on their own initiative moved to a flank, andtogether attacked the crew of the gun which was still in action. They captured the gun and the crew, and so allowed the advance to continue.”
