Jarvis, Richard George
Born 7th November 1893 Longford Tasmania the son of Thomas David and Afhild Wyndham Jarvis (nee Fleming) a farm labourer who embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 25th April 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial Gallipoli Turkey. His parents were living at “Don Banks” New Norfolk at the time of his death and sadly his cousin Pte Tasman Jarvis was killed on the same day. Mr. and Mrs. T. Jarvis, of New Norfolk have received a telegram from the Defence Department of which the following is a copy:-''Officially reported by Court of Inquiry killed in action at Gallipoli, between the 25th and 28th of April, 1915 Private Richard George Jarvis, 12th Battalion (previously reported missing). Their Majesties the King and Queen, the Commonwealth Government; as well as the District Commandant, convey deepest sympathy in loss sustained by them and Army." Private Jarvis left Hobart with the first contingent and was one of the first to land at Gallipoli. The Mercury 3rd November 1916
