THE LATE PRIVATE JEFFREY.

Mr. and Mrs. W. Jeffrey, of Steel St have received a letter from Pte Row Wilson concerning the death of their son Dave who was recently killed in action in France.  It states that after 18 days in the firing line they were coming out when Pte. Jeffrey waited for some comrades who were behind. The Germans opened fire at that moment, and a high explosive shell fell where he was standing. Pte. Wilson states that he was a fine soldier and frightened of nothing, and conveys the deepest sympathy of comrades and Devonport boys of the Battalion to the mourning parents. Pte. Jeffrey was buried by the Pioneers in a cemetery on the main road between Neuve-Eglise and Messines. They erected a white wooden cross, hearing his regimental number, name and battalion over the grave.
