Jeffrey, John
Born 24th May 1890 Barrington Tasmania the son of James and Ruth Jeffrey (nee Smallcombe) a labourer from Gunn’s Plains who listed his brother Herbert Jeffrey as his next of kin he embarked Melbourne 10th September 1915 on board SS Makarini with the 12th Infantry Battalion.
Official historian Charles Bean tells us Private John Jeffrey, of Lower Barrington, Tasmania, became unconscious and was taken to an advanced dressing station. Recovering, he set out for the front carrying up extra machine gun magazines then promptly turned around and carried two wounded men back to a dressing station. Although wounded next day, Jeffrey refused to leave saying he could still carry ammunition.
He was serving with the 52nd Battalion when he was killed in action 3rd September 1916 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France
