Jeffrey, William Oakford
Born 26th February 1888 Hobart Tasmania to William and Mary Jeffrey (nee Oakford) he was a Telegraph linesman when he enlisted. He departed Melbourne 3rd October 1916 on the HMAT Aeneas with the Australian Field Artillery-116 to 120 Howitzer Batteries. He was two years in active service in which time he won both the Croix de Guerre and Military Medal. He was killed in action Harbonnieres France 10th August 1918 Military Medal 'On the night of 13th/14th August 1917, North East of YPRES, his Battery was moving into a new position in the old 'NO MAN's LAND" much difficulty was experienced in getting the guns over old shell holes and very wet condition of the ground. Heavy Gas and H.E. bombardment was opened on the road and tracks where the Battery was at the time. His Officer collapsed from Gas-poisoning. This N.C.O. then arranged for his officer to be cared for. He then assumed command and completed the Task of placing the guns in position. He displayed great courage, initiative and resource.'
