Jeffs, Ernest Alfred
Born New South Wales the son of James Daniel and Mary Elizabeth Jeffs but married and living in Launceston Tasmania when he enlisted, a blacksmith he embarked Melbourne 30th October 1917 on board “HMAT Aeneas” with the 40th Infantry Battalion as a bandsman. He was killed in action 5th July 1918 when a bomb dropped on to the tent where he was sleeping killing him instantly and is commemorated in the Querrieu British Cemetery, France. News has been received of the death of Ernest Jeffs on active service in France. Before enlisting with the A.I.F for a number of years deceased was engaged in the loco department of the Tasmanian Government Railways at Launceston and was a popular member of the Railway Band. The news of his death will be met with sincere regret by his many friends. He leaves a widow and small family who now reside in Melbourne. The Weekly Courier 8th August 1918
