WW1
Jones, Alfred Arthur
Born 17th August 1894 Longford Tasmania to Alfred Henry and Dora Anna Jones (nee Burk) a farm labourer who departed Melbourne 21st October 1916 on board “HMAT Port Melbourne” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 7th June 1917 at Messines and is commemorated in the Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Belgium.
It is only about four weeks ago that the Rev. L. T. Tarleton had the sad task of conveying to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jones of Longford the news that their eldest son had been killed in action. Again on Friday he had to go and break the distressing tidings that their only remaining son, Private Alfred Jones had also made the supreme sacrifice for his King and country. The deepest sympathy is felt for the parents and sisters in their double bereavement. The Examiner 2nd July 1917
