Ladd, Albert Edward
Born Maryborough Victoria the son of Charles Richard and Emma Malinda Ladd (nee Rowe married to Julia Ann Fitzpatrick with two children, a miner he enlisted Claremont Tasmania and embarked 20th February 1916 on board “HMAT Ulysses” with the Mining Corps Company 3.
The following is taken from The Bendigo Story – Anzac Centenary Sapper, Albert Edward Ladd, service number 1071, Unit: 3rd Australian Tunnelling Company was killed in action 27/11/1916 and is remembered at Hersin Communal Cemetery Extension, Hersin-Coupigny, Lens, Nord Pas de Calais, France. Prior to enlistment 1/8/1915 Albert was employed as a miner in Bendigo he was aged 29 years and his wife, J A Ladd, Mandurang South via Bendigo was his next of kin. Sapper Ladd had embarked 20/2/1916 from Sydney per HMAT Ulysses A38 with the Mining Corps [Nos 1-1447] and 1 to 3 Reinforcements. Albert had been born in Maryborough and married Julia Ann Fitzpatrick in 1909. Their daughter, Rita, was born the following year. Sapper Ladd was one of 13 soldiers who were working together in ‘Black Watch Sap’ at Hill 70 close to Loos, they were loading a mine when a premature explosion took place. They were all killed outright at about 2pm on 27/11/1916. As far as the informant, Spr. D. McPherson could remember 10 men were removed and buried at Hersin not far from Hoeux, and one large cross was erected suitably inscribed. Macklam James Martin, No.1364 Ballarat. Bendigonian, Thursday 8 March 1917 page 9 article KILLED IN ACTION. SAPPER. ALBERT LADD. OFFICER ATTESTS BRAVERY. Mrs. J. A. Ladd, of 68 Olinda-street, Quarry Hill, has received the following letter of sympathy in regard to the death of her husband, Sapper Albert Ladd, of the 3rd Tunneling Company, who was killed in action in France on the 29th November last, from- Major L. J. Coulter; officer in command:-"Dear Mrs. Ladd;- Please accept the sincere sympathy of all ranks of this company in your bereavement. I had known your husband since he joined the forces, and have always appreciated him as a good man. He was a man that I should have picked out as a companion in any dangerous work, for on- such occasions he was at his best, and could be depended on." Source: Mrs. Bev Hanson
