Lane, Frederick William

 

 

 

Born 28th February 1889 Dunedin New Zealand but living at Lindisfarne Tasmania when he enlisted the son of Benjamin James and Marion Fanny Lane (nee Barsham) a draughtsman with the Tasmanian Civil Service he departed Melbourne 17th July 1915 on board “HMAT Orsova” with the 12th Infantry Battalion and the rank of Lieutenant.

He was killed in action 28th March 1918 Dernacourt France and is commemorated in the Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

A cable message received on Saturday by Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Lane stated that their fifth son, Lieut. Frederick William Lane of the 47th Battalion had .been killed in action in France on March 28. He left Hobart for the front in July 1915, served some months in Egypt, and in 1916 was sent to France. He was an old Leslie House scholar and subsequently a draftsman in the Lands Titles Office.
