Lee, John Orwood
Born 27th August 1887 Westbury Tasmania to Jonathon and Clara Lee (nee Yates) a farmer who departed Melbourne 8th February 1916 on board “HMAT Warilda” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was with the 52nd Battalion when he was killed in action 7th June 1917 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium
The late Private J O Lee was one of the first Tasmanian volunteers from this district. He was trained in Claremont Camp, left Melbourne on February 8th 1916 and arrived in Egypt on March 3rd of that year. He arrived at Marseilles France on June 11th and entrained for the front. He was wounded the first time at Moquet Farm September 3rd 1916 and admitted to Rouen Hospital thence transferred to the 3rd London General Hospital. Afterwards he was at Bleakdown Military Hospital. He was subsequently at Codford, Salisbury Plains and left there for France in April 1917 and was killed in action on June 7th. Pte Lee was 29 years of age and the third son of Mr and Mrs Jonathon Lee; he was born in Frankford. He had the honour of fighting for the freedom of his country in the greatest war ever waged. “The path of duty is the path of honour” Frankford Northern Tasmania July 17 The Weekly Courier 19th July 1917
