Lonergan, Patrick Francis
He was born Zeehan Tasmania, the son of P. F Lonergan of New Norfolk, an assayer who departed Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. His identity disc was handed in but no body recovered and it was later found he was killed in action 25th April 1915 on the first day of landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula. He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. Mr. D.F. Lonergan of Now Norfolk has received a telegram from the Defence Department, of which the following is a copy : -"Officially reported by Court of Inquiry, killed in action on the 26th April, 1915, at Gallipoli, Private P. F. Lonergan, 12th Batt. Their Majesties the King and Queen the Commonwealth Government as well as the District Commandant, on behalf of the Army, convoy deepest sympathy in loss sustained." Private Lonergan was reported missing on June l8, 1915, and after considerable trouble and expense in interviewing all returned invalided soldiers, his father was convinced long ago that ho was dead. He was an employee of the Mount Lyell Co., and left Queenstown with the first draft of troops. He was one of the first of the Australians to land at Gallipoli and they advanced a considerable distance before he fell. The Mercury 31st October 1916
