Pte Mackey enlisted on 2 May 1916 and died of cerebro- spinal meningitis at Hobart General Hospital on 26 June 1916. He was 32 years of age. Pte Mackey's brother 3147 Pte Francis Joseph Mackey, 40th Battalion, was killed in action in Belgium on 5 October 1917, aged 37.

he news of the death of Private William Mackey was received here with much regret as he was highly esteemed through the district. His body was interred in the local Roman Catholic cemetery, the Rev Father Ryan of Oatlands conducting the burial service.  A firing squad, under Lt Brownell came from Claremont to pay a last tribute to their comrade.  Among the many beautiful wreaths placed on the grave was one from the Colebrook Rifle Club of which deceased had been a member.  Sincere sympathy is expressed with his relatives
