Wedding portrait of 3147 Private (Pte) Francis Joseph Mackey, 40th Battalion, with his bride Cecilia Agnes. A barman of Huonville, Tas, Pte Mackey enlisted on 30 October 1916 and sailed with the 7th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Seang Bee on 10 February 1917. He was killed in action, aged 37, on 5 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
The late Francis Joseph Mackey son of Mrs P Mackay Hobart was 37 years of age when he enlisted. He entered Claremont camp on September 19, 1916 and embarked with reinforcements of the Tasmanian Battalion February 7th. Private Mackey remained in England some time after his arrival there and underwent a further course of training. After arriving at the front Frank was transferred to a stretcher platoon and it was while engaged in the hazardous and heroic work of succouring the wounded that this brave man fell. The deceased soldier leaves a wife and a magnificent baby boy to mourn their great loss. Private Mackey was well known in sporting circles and during his residence in the Huon was associated with Mr. Ed Harris of “Rookwood” and Mr Luke Perry of Huonville in the capacity of horse trainer. In that capacity he earned a reputation that won for him a wide circle of admiring friends. The Weekly Courier 20th December 1917
