Born Victoria the son of James Main but living in Queenstown Tasmania when he enlisted, a clerk he departed Melbourne 4th May 1916 on board “HMAT Port Lincoln” with the 13th Field Artillery Brigade. He was wounded in France 3rd October 1917 and died from those wounds 1st. September 1917 and buried in the Bois Guillaume Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
News was received here on Saturday that Gunner Thomas Main son of Mr and Mrs J. F Main of South Queenstown had died of wounds in France where he had been for some considerable time with the Australian Field Artillery the sad news being communicated by the Rev G E Harrison of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to the heartbroken parents. Tom was yet another of the lads who had grown up in this district and by his steady attention to his work and generally courteous manner had endeared himself to our people, young and old. It is understood that death followed a serious fracture of the femur but no other details are so far available. Very sincere sympathy has been extended o Mr and Mrs Main though sorrowing for the personal loss of a good son are proud that he had fought a good fight and put up a record of manliness which could we well followed by a number of our lads who still hang back.
