Maine, Clarence William
A miner from Dundas Tasmania and married to Lillian Jessie Millen he embarked Melbourne 22nd December 1914 on board “HMAT Ceramic” with the 15th Infantry Battalion. Cpl Maine died 27th May 1915 at sea of wounds received at Gallipoli on board HS Dunluce Castle and was buried at sea. He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. Private C. W. Maine ("Clarry") as he was familiarly known to his many friends on the West Coast, who died of wounds received at the Dardanelles, was born at Dundas and went to the state school there. After leaving school he worked at the Comet and Adelaide for some years, and then through lack of work in Dundas went to Renison Bell and Rosebery. Private Maine was one of the first who enlisted to the "call to arms." He was a great athlete, winning many chopping events, and was one of the "West's foremost axemen. Ho was also a footballer of note and played cricket very well. As a boy, a youth, and a man, in his sports, and at his work, he endeared himself to a host of friends. He was in the early twenties and leaves a young wife and two children. The Examiner 18th June 1915
