Maingay, Charles Frederick Carne
Born 13th July 1892 George Town Tasmania to Frederick and Nelly Maingay (nee Marsh) a timber worker who departed Melbourne 24th August 1916 on board “HMAT Botanist” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was at Messines and with others of his company was holding the line when the Germans began to shell them. They were waiting for their rations and most of them went up the trench to see if they had arrived. A shell came over and burst in the very place they had just left Pte Maingan was the only one left there and he was killed instantly 18th September 1918 an as he has no kown grave he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
