Mansfield, Albert Douglas
Born 26th June 1889 Ulverstone Tasmania to William and Louisa Evelyn Mansfield (nee McCall) a labourer who departed Melbourne 22nd December 1914 on board “HMAT Ceramic” with the 15th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 18th May 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and was buried Shrapnel Gulley 20th May 1918. He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. Private A D Mansfield was killed at the Dardanelles about June 9. He was the son of Mrs Mansfield and the late Mr W Mansfield and was a native of Don and resided with his mother there up until the time of his enlistment. He was one of the first to offer his services to the Empire and to be accepted. Deceased was a very popular young man being of a kind and quiet disposition. He was a true sport and an ardent cricketer. The following message was received by his mother from Captain Good through Mrs Good “Please convey to Mrs Mansfield and family my heartfelt sympathy in their sad bereavement. Bert was killed gallantly fighting the Turks. He died as he had lived – brave to the last. Throughout the campaign none could have wished for a better soldier. He was shot through the head, death being instantaneous.” The Weekly Courier 19th August 1915
