Marriott, Dudley
Born 1890 Glenora Tasmania the son of Robert and Louisa Marriott (nee Bush) a farmer who embarked Hobart 8th May 1916 on board “HMAT Seang Choon” with the 12th Infantry Battalion He was killed in action 7th June 1917 in Belgium and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. The following letter has been received by Mr R Marriott of Tyenna giving particulars of his son’s death Belgium 14th June 1917 Dear Mr Marriott, it is with deepest sympathy and feeling that I write to you of your son Dudley’s death. He was killed instantaneously by a shell in the battle of Messines on the evening on June 7th. I wish to state that your son had done such splendid work and was so bright and cheerful under all conditions that his loss to my platoon was very great. He had so endeared himself to all ranks that his absence leaves an unfillable void. He is buried near the French position and his grave has been well tended by his comrades. His duty was well done. The whole platoon joins me in the deepest sympathy for you and Mrs. Marriott. Yours sincerely A A W Downie, Lieutenant The Weekly Courier 25th October 1917
