Marshall, Vere Claude
Born 1896 Macquarie Plains Tasmania the son of Robert
Warren and Frances Marshall (nee Koslosque) of
“Kentdale” Macquarie Plains a shop assistant he embarked
Brisbane 29th June 1915 on board “HMAT
Aeneas” with the 26th Infantry Battalion.
He died 26th September 1915 on board HS
Aquitania from a bullet wound to the spinal column
received on the Gallipoli Peninsula. He is commemorated
in the
Netley Military Cemetery, Netley, Hampshire, England,
United Kingdom.
His brother John Herbert Marshall as killed in action 5th
August 1916 at Pozieres and is commemorated on the
Villers-Bretonneux
Memorial, France.
General regret was express when the fact became known
last week that Private V.C Marshall son of Mr and Mrs
Robert Marshall of “Kentdale” had fallen at the front.
Private Marshall, who was only 19 years of age as a fine
type of young man, every inch a soldier. At St
Augustine’s Church last Sunday morning a memorial
service was conducted by Rev F Thorpe when special
mention was made to the
late Privates Marshall and
Gilbert Roy Evans. The church was crowded by a
sympathetic congregation. The late Pte Gilbert Evans
was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Edward Evans. He did
not reach the front having died in Egypt some time ago.
Both the bereaved families are still represented at the
war by Private John Marshall and Edward Evans brothers
of the lads who have fallen.
