Martin, Eric Stanley
Born 1892 Branxholm Tasmania the son of Leslie and Amy Gertrude Martin (nee Beswick) a clerk he embarked Fremantle 25th June 1915 on board “HMAT Wandilla” with the 12th Infantry Battalion for Gallipoli. Cpl Martin was wounded Polygon Wood with shell wounds to the face and was transferred to England on the hospital ship “St Andrew” where he died 19th October 1917 at Queen’s Hospital Sidcup Kent England. He was buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, United Kingdom.
Mr and Mrs L. D. Martin of Hagley have received letters from an English lady who visited Sidcup Hospital several times from Archdeacon Richard who buried their son Eric and from friends which all go to show that the wounded soldier received every attention up to the last and was buried with full military honors in the lovely and well kept Brookwood surrounds. The deceased soldier was suffering from severe face wounds received on October 4, and succumbed to those on October l9. Daily Telegraph Launceston 2nd January 1918
