Born Yackandandah, Victoria the son of Andrew and Jane Matzen a telephone mechanic he embarked Melbourne 24^th August 1916 on board “HMAT Botanist” with the 12^th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 6^th October 1917 in Belgium and is commemorated in the Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Ypres, Flanders, Belgium
