Maynard, William Samuel
Born Cape Barren Island the son of John and Eva Chappell Maynard (nee Stafford) a mariner he embarked Melbourne 24th August 1916 on board “HMAT Botanist” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 6th April 1917 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France. A Flinders Island correspondent writes “I much regret to say that the sad news has lately been received here of several casualties among the troops who have enlisted from this island. Mr Will Maynard, a son of the late Mr John Maynard Snr. has been killed in France. The deceased, with his brother Mr Frank Maynard joined the forces somewhat over 2 years ago. Mr Frank Maynard met his death about a year since and now the same sad fate has overtaken his brother. Both were young men of great promise and deservedly popular on the island. Universal sympathy will be felt for Mrs Maynard and her family in their sad bereavement. The Weekly Courier 17th May 1917
