Mazey, Lewis William
Born 1894 Hobart Tasmania the son of William Henry and Eliza Ann Mazey (nee Smith) a fisherman he embarked Adelaide 10th February 1917 on board “HMAT Seang Bee” with the 40th Infantry Battalion.
He was killed in action 13th October 1917 at Passchendaele France and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium Mrs. W. Mazey of Upper Lord Street, Sandy Bay has had several letters from France and Dundee (Scotland) in reference to the loss of her son, Private Lewis W. Mazey, 40th Battalion, stating he was killed by an enemy bullet on 12th October, 1917 in the Passchendaele battle. Sergeant Fletcher went to him immediately he was hit, but death was instantaneous, and he was spared suffering. All wrote of him as a good lad and liked by all Colonel Lord, 40th Battalion, in his message of sympathy, said, 'I know Mazey to have been a good fellow and a brave soldier, and he is one of the hundreds of thousands who have fallen in defence of their country and one of those glorious Australians who have been heard of so much in this war, and who will never be forgotten while history remains."
