McCreghan James
Born 1890 Barrington Tasmania the son of James and Mary McCreghan (nee O’Donnell) a farm labourer he embarked Melbourne 30th September 1916 on board “HMAT Suffolk” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 6th April 1917 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France. His brother (No 7100) died 22nd March 1917 in England from broncho pneumonia and was buried in the Durrington Cemetery, Durrington, Wiltshire, United Kingdom The sad news was conveyed to Mr. and Mrs. McCreghan of Lower Barrington by a telegram from Father Dowling of the death of their son James who made the supreme sacrifice in France on April 9. Private McCreghan was 3l years of age, and was a popular young man. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family who were only a few days ago informed of the death of their other son, Patrick, in the Fargo Military Hospital. The Examiner 8th May 1917
