If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of hosting this website to keep it alive would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

McDevitt James

Born on 21 Apr 1891 at Leongatha, Victoria to Alexander and Rose McDevitt.  His father Alexander, a timber worker from Tasmania was working at Leongatha at the time of his birth. He attended school at St. Joseph's Convent School in Hobart and enlisted in Hobart but was rejected because of his mild epilepsy. He was determined to enlist so went to Sydney and enlisted at Liverpool on 3rd November 1914 falsely giving his birthplace as Battersea, London.

He was accepted on his second attempt and after training in New South Wales, left Sydney on 11 February 1915 on the 'Seang Bee' bound for Gallipoli. Only 3 months after leaving Sydney he was wounded in action at Gallipoli and died on board HMHS Soudan on 19 May 1915. He was buried at sea.

He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial Gallipoli.
