McKendrick, John Thomas

 

Born 2nd September 1859 Oatlands Tasmania to John and Mary Ann McKendrick (nee Thomas) a farmer who embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. 

He was mentioned in despatches – see London Gazette 28th February 1916

 Lance Corporal McKendrick was hit by a bomb 11th August 1915 in a trench at Lone Pine and killed instantly.  He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES

A LATROBE SOLDIER'S BRAVERY.

The following despatch has been received by Mr. J. T. McKendrick of Paloona in regard to his son, Corpl. J. T. McKendrick who was killed on August 11 1915, at Gallipoli after 30 hours of continuous bomb throwing which information was conveyed to his parents by the officers of his company who held the deceased soldier in high esteem. The despatch reads : —War Office Whitehall, June 21. 1916. Sir, — I have it in command from His Majesty the King to inform you as next of kin of the late Private John Thomas McKendrick No. 149 of the 12th Batt. (A.I.F Tasmania), that this private was mentioned in despatches from General Sir Ian Hamilton, dated Dec. 11. 1915 and published in the supplement of the London Gazette dated 28th Jan., 1916 for gallant and distinguished service in the field. I am to express to you the King's high appreciation of those services, and to add that His Majesty trust that their public acknowledgment may be of some consolation in your bereavement.  I have the honor to be your obedient servant.
