Mears, Arthur Albert
Born Granton Tasmania the son of Alfred Thomas and Mary Anne Mears
(nee Askey) a labourer he embarked Hobart 20th
October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th
Infantry Battalion.
He died 7th March 1919 in England after being wounded in
France and operated on in England he suffered a heart
attack and was buried in the
Brookwood Military Cemetery, Pirbright, Surrey, United
Kingdom.
His brother Pte Clarence William Mears (No 4540 died
from wounds received in the field and was buried in the
Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension France.

of South Bridgewater has received the following from
Base Records, Melbourne:-"1 have much pleasure in
forwarding extract from 'London Gazette of l6th
November, 1916, relating to conspicuous services
rendered by No. 400, Private A.

Mears,
12th Battalion :-Awarded
the Military Medal-His Majesty the King has been
graciously
pleased to award the Military Medal for
bravery in the field to the undermentioned soldier-No.
400 Private
Arthur
Albert
Mears.
The recipient went through the Gallipoli campaign,
including the famous lauding. His relatives have just
received word that he has been
wounded.
