Midson, Frederick George

Born 17th May 1894 Fingal Tasmania the son of Thomas Henry and Margaret Jane Midson (nee Mannington) a farmer he embarked Melbourne 20th October 1916 on board “HMAT Port Lincoln” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 6th October 1917 in Belgium and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium

Mr and Mrs Midson received the following from an officer and chaplain in France : Captain S. R. Houghton} officer commanding 2nd Co., 12th Battalion, writes :

Dear Mrs Midson, It is with much regret 1 have to inform you of your son's death. Private Midson gave his life for his Country during recent operations, in which the Australians were engaged.  In losing him we have lost not only a gallant soldier, but a brave comrade, who was beloved by all who knew him. His vacant place in our ranks is felt by the whole of his company, and on their behalf I wish to offer you our deepest sympathy. It is a relief to know his death was painless, and it was instantaneous. He died side by side with other members of a gun team to which he was attached. Once again offering you my heartfelt sympathy.

Chaplain W K. Douglas, chaplain 12th Battalion, A. I.F., writes: Dear Mr Midson Just a line to express to you the sincere sympathy of the officers and men of the battalion on the death of your son Private F G Mid son. He was killed on October 6 during our recent advance in the Ypres district. Death was very merciful and sudden and at least you have the satisfaction of knowing that he suffered no pain.  Together with some of his comrades, he was buried close to where he fell — between Polygon Wood and Zonnebeke — about four miles east of Ypres. I am hoping that it will be possible later on to mark the grave with a cross. Your boy's effects will be forwarded to you through the Base. With the sympathy of all ranks.

Private Frederick George Midson who was recently reported killed in action in France on October 6 last, was the oldest son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Midson of Mount Nicholas. He was born at Fingal in 1893, and was therefore in his 25th year. He| was a young man of high promise and enlisted at the beginning of 1916- He was employed by Mr Bullock, farmer,, near St. Mary's prior to his enlistment.  As his father is practically an invalid and the eldest of the remaining two sons is a cripple, we cannot but sympathise very deeply with his people.
