Portrait of 461 Private (Pte) Walter Thomas Monks, 40th Battalion, of Hobart, Tas. A labourer prior to enlisting in August 1915, Pte Monks embarked from Hobart on board HMAT Berrima (A35) on 1 July 1916. He arrived in France for service on the Western Front in October 1916 and was transferred to the 51st Battalion shortly after. Pte Monks was killed in action in France on 1 April 1917, aged 24. Pte Monks was one of three brothers who enlisted: 6335 Pte Eric Wilfred Donald Monks, 17th Battalion, returned to Australia in 1919; 4616 Lance Corporal Henry Roy Tasman Williams, 12th Battalion, died of wounds on 2 July 1918
