Murrell, Sydney

Studio portrait of 6504 Private (Pte) Sydney Murrell, 12th Battalion. An orchardist from Castle Forbes Bay, Tasmania prior to enlistment, Pte Murrell embarked with the 21st Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Suffolk on 30 September 1916. Later wounded in action, he remained on duty. Subsequently gassed he was evacuated to England. On rejoining his unit, he was killed in action in France and was buried in the Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France.

 

Mrs. Sidney Murrell, of Castle Forbes Bay, received official notification last week that her husband (Private Sidney Murrell) had been reported killed in action, on August 23, 1918. Private Murrell enlisted in August, 1916, and left Tasmania to reinforce the 12th Battalion. He had been twice previously wounded. A brother is serving with the A.I.F in France, but at the present he is in hospital with a broken bone in the arm. The deceased was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Murrell, of Kia Ora, Castle Forbes Bay.
