O'Brien, Basil George Henry
Born 20th April 1898 Launceston Tasmania to George Claxton and Genevieve O’Brien (nee Lathey) a railway clerk who embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. Lance Corporal O’Brien was killed in action 7th June 1917 in Belgium and is commemorated in the Bethleem Farm West Cemetery, Belgium. His older brother Sgt Harold Douglas O’Brien was killed in action 22nd July 1916 on the Somme.
Mr G C O’Brien of Branxholm has received a letter from Lieutenant A A Downie expressing sympathy in the death of his son Basil O’Brien who, he says, was killed instantaneously by a shell during the evening of June 7th in the battle of Messines. He was leading his lewis gun section, doing splendid work and setting a fine example in bravery and coolness. He was always cheerful and bright under all conditions and his loss is a sad blow to my platoon. His grave is near the French frontier and has been well tended by his comrades. He died fighting and was a son to be proud of. The Weekly Courier 23rd August 1917
