O'Neil, Joseph Reginald
Born Launceston Tasmania the son of John Henry and Harriet O’Neil of 56 Foster Street Inveresk a blacksmith he embarked Sydney 20th January 1916 on board “HMAT Runic” with the 8th Field Company Engineers. He died 21st August 1916 at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station from gunshot wounds to the head (fractured skull) and leg and was buried in the Estaires Communal Cemetery and Extension, Estaires, Nord Pas de Calais, France. Another Launceston footballer J R O’Neil generally known on the football field as “Jerry” O’Neil has fallen in France having been killed in action on August 22nd. He played with the North Launceston Club. Jerry was a game, hard working follower who was never beaten and he did some excellent work for his club. He played in some of the most recent North and South matches. He also followed rowing being a member of the North Esk Club. The Weekly Courier 21st September 1916
