If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of hosting this website to keep it alive would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

Oakley, William Henry

Born 1894 Waratah Tasmania the son of Benjamin and Maria Oakley (nee Hughes), a labourer he departed Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 25th April 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

The uncertainty regarding the fate of Pte W. H. Oakley, No. 356 12th Battalion, has at last been solved. He was reported missing at the landing on Gallipoli, and afterwards stated to be a prisoner of the Turks; but on Saturday the Rev. G. A. Rowe, rector of Devonport, received the fateful wire from the military authorities that it was officially reported, as the result of a Court of Inquiry, that Pte Oakley had been killed in action between April 25 and April 27, 1915 (previously reported missing), and asking him to notify the father Mr. B. Oakley, of Devonport, also conveying the sympathy of the King and Queen and  military authorities. Pte Oakley enlisted at Waratah and has a brother on active service.
