Olley, Eric Henry
Born Scarborough England Eric Henry Olley emigrated to Tasmania to take up farming. He enlisted in Tasmania and departed Brisbane 29th June 1915 on “HMAT Aneas” with the 26th Battalion and the rank of sergeant. TASMANIAN CASUALTIES Information has been received through the The Cross Enquiry Office that Second Lieutenant Eric H. Olley of Bridgenorth, previously reported missing, was killed at Pozieres Ridge about August 4 last. He had been badly wounded by machine gun fire in the elbow, and was being bandaged by Private W. Manning when a shrapnel shell burst alongside, killing him and wounding Manning. Finding his officer dead, Private Manning crawled back and is now in England. Lieutenant Olley was sergeant-major at the time, and never knew of his commission. Private Manning adds:--"He was the most popular man in the company" Examiner, Launceston 18th November 1916
